    Coordinated motion of UGVs and a UAV

    Coordination of autonomous mobile robots has received significant attention during the last two decades. Coordinated motion of heterogenous robot groups are more appealing due to the fact that unique advantages of different robots might be combined to increase the overall efficiency of the system. In this paper, a heterogeneous robot group composed of multiple Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) and an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) collaborate in order to accomplish a predefined goal. UGVs follow a virtual leader which is defined as the projection of UAV’s position onto the horizontal plane. The UAV broadcasts its position at certain frequency. The position of the virtual leader and distances from the two closest neighbors are used to create linear and angular velocity references for each UGV. Several coordinated tasks have been presented and the results are verified by simulations where certain amount of communication delay between the vehicles is also considered. Results are quite promising

    Image based visual servoing using bitangent points applied to planar shape alignment

    We present visual servoing strategies based on bitangents for aligning planar shapes. In order to acquire bitangents we use convex-hull of a curve. Bitangent points are employed in the construction of a feature vector to be used in visual control. Experimental results obtained on a 7 DOF Mitsubishi PA10 robot, verifies the proposed method

    Performance improvement in VSLAM using stabilized feature points

    Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) is the main prerequisite for the autonomy of a mobile robot. In this paper, we present a novel method that enhances the consistency of the map using stabilized corner features. The proposed method integrates template matching based video stabilization and Harris corner detector. Extracting Harris corner features from stabilized video consistently increases the accuracy of the localization. Data coming from a video camera and odometry are fused in an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) to determine the pose of the robot and build the map of the environment. Simulation results validate the performance improvement obtained by the proposed technique

    Under vehicle perception for high level safety measures using a catadioptric camera system

    In recent years, under vehicle surveillance and the classification of the vehicles become an indispensable task that must be achieved for security measures in certain areas such as shopping centers, government buildings, army camps etc. The main challenge to achieve this task is to monitor the under frames of the means of transportations. In this paper, we present a novel solution to achieve this aim. Our solution consists of three main parts: monitoring, detection and classification. In the first part we design a new catadioptric camera system in which the perspective camera points downwards to the catadioptric mirror mounted to the body of a mobile robot. Thanks to the catadioptric mirror the scenes against the camera optical axis direction can be viewed. In the second part we use speeded up robust features (SURF) in an object recognition algorithm. Fast appearance based mapping algorithm (FAB-MAP) is exploited for the classification of the means of transportations in the third part. Proposed technique is implemented in a laboratory environment

    Coordinated task manipulation by nonholonomic mobile robots

    Coordinated task manipulation by a group of autonomous mobile robots has received signicant research effort in the last decade. Previous studies in the area revealed that one of the main problems in the area is to avoid the collisions of the robots with obstacles as well as with other members of the group. Another problem is to come up with a model for successful task manipulation. Signicant research effort has accumulated on the denition of forces to generate reference trajectories for each autonomous mobile robots engaged in coordinated behavior. If the mobile robots are nonholonomic, this approach fails to guarantee successful manipulation of the task since the so-generated reference trajectories might not satisfy the nonholonomic constraint. In this work, we introduce a novel coordinated task manipulation model inclusive of an online collision avoidance algorithm. The reference trajectory for each autonomous nonholonomic mobile robot is generated online in terms of linear and angular velocity references for the robot; hence these references automatically satisfy the nonholonomic constraint. The generated reference velocities inevitably depend on the nature of the specied coordinated task. Several coordinated task examples, on the basis of a generic task, have been presented and the proposed model is veried through simulations

    In this paper, we explore model free visual servoing algorithms by experimentally evaluating their performances for various tasks performed on a microassembly workstation developed in our lab. Model free or so called uncalibrated visual servoing does not need the system calibration (microscope-camera-micromanipulator) and the model of the observed scene. It is robust to parameter changes and disturbances. We tested its performance in point-to-point positioning and various trajectory following tasks. Experimental results validate the utility of model free visual servoing in microassembly tasks

    This paper develops a recursive method for computing moments of 2D objects described by elliptic Fourier descriptors (EFD). Green’s theorem is utilized to transform 2D surface integrals into 1D line integrals and EFD description is employed to derive recursions for moments computations. Experiments are performed to quantify the accuracy of our proposed method. Comparison with Bernstein-B´ezier representations is also provided

    Formation control of nonholonomic mobile robots using implicit polynomials and elliptic Fourier descriptors

    This paper presents a novel method for the formation control of a group of nonholonomic mobile robots using implicit and parametric descriptions of the desired formation shape. The formation control strategy employs implicit polynomial (IP) representations to generate potential fields for achieving the desired formation and the elliptical Fourier descriptors (EFD) to maintain the formation once achieved. Coordination of the robots is modeled by linear springs between each robot and its two nearest neighbors. Advantages of this new method are increased flexibility in the formation shape, scalability to different swarm sizes and easy implementation. The shape formation control is first developed for point particle robots and then extended to nonholonomic mobile robots. Several simulations with robot groups of different sizes are presented to validate our proposed approach

    Control of a hovering quadrotor UAV subject to periodic disturbances

    Quadrotor is a rotary-wing UAV, which has a simple structure but highly nonlinear dynamics. Controlling a hovering quadrotor subject to external disturbances is a crucial task in many applications. In this paper, periodic disturbances have been tackled and novel disturbance observers (DOB) have been developed to estimate the total disturbance acting on the vehicle. It is especially difficult to reject periodic disturbances in low as well as in high frequency region due to the bandwidth limitations of the low-pass filter utilized in conventional DOB. As the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter is critical, increased bandwidth reduces the robustness which degrades the disturbance rejection performance in the presence of noise. In addition to the low-pass filter, the new structure also consists of a bank of band-pass filters and a high-pass filter. Since the total disturbance acting on the vehicle is compensated by the proposed DOB, PD controllers with feedforward terms are utilized for stabilizing both position and attitude dynamics. Simulation results show the improved robustness obtained by the proposed method
